BEHIND   THE   BLUE   DOOR
A Look into a Parallel Universe Where REALTORŪ Associations Do not Exist

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone.

Picture for a moment, a Real Estate industry without the protection of a trade association. What would business be like for a real estate professional in the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone? Let's look into this bizarre world just over the horizon.

Life in the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone looks very familiar. Nevertheless, the similarities are only on the surface. Strange things happen under the surface in the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone.

In the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone no one adheres to a code of ethics, there is no protection from burdensome and restrictive local, state and federal legislation that limit your ability to grow your business. In the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone there are no FHA programs to open the door of home ownership to millions of new customers, there are no standardized contracts and caveat emptor is the only disclosure requirement.

In the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone, anyone can call himself a REALTORŪ and add any designations they feel will help their business. Just sold a house? Why not call yourself a Certified Residential Specialist. Sold your first farm for a subdivision? In the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone, you are now an Accredited Land Consultant. Just returned from a long weekend in Montreal, Quebec, why not add Certified International Property Specialist to your list of credentials.

In the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone there is no trade association to protect your interests. Mortgage interest payments are not tax deductible, FHA, VHA and other housing programs simply do not exist. Because there is no voice for real estate, millions of Americans have been denied the chance to build the personal wealth and family stability that goes hand in hand with homeownership.

Our trip to the Twilight Zone has been fueled only by the power of imagination. Unfortunately, our reality might be just as frightening, because to work in the real estate industry, you do not have to be a REALTORŪ. However, if you want to be a real estate professional, you must be a REALTORŪ. If you want to harness the power of belonging to an association with almost 1,000,000 real estate professionals, you must be a REALTORŪ. If you want one of the most effective lobbying organizations in Washington D.C. to be on your side, you must be a REALTORŪ. Being a REALTORŪ tells your customers you are part of a professional organization. It tells your customers that you are dedicated to conducting business in an ethical manner. Being a REALTORŪ tells the community that you will promote the preservation of the right to own, use, and transfer real property.

If you enter a place where caveat emptor is the only rule and everything is handled at your own risk, you can be sure of one thing: you have entered a new dimension, a place with no hope, no protection and no profit, a place called the REALTORSŪ Twilight Zone.
